Jodie Rickets travelled to Amsterdam to represent Tunbridge Wells Triathlon Club at Challenge Almere, Europe’s oldest long distance triathlon. Competing over “Ironman” distance, athletes are attracted to the flat course and big race feel at this flagship event.

The race started with a two lap 3.8km swim, starting in front of the iconic Kunstlinie Theatre on Almere Esplanade. Rickets, confident following a consistent training block, exited the water in 1hr20. A swift transition ensured she was well placed in Age Group heading out on the bike.

The 180km bike route led out to the dyke for spectacular views across the capital city. The course continued through a wildlife reserve and extended across a section of reclaimed land below sea level. The long straight roads were exposed to the elements and athletes had to contend with challenging headwinds. Rickets measured her effort to complete the bike course in 6hr47.

The six lap marathon looped through the city centre, boasting contemporary architecture, before returning to the lake with enthusiastic support along the Esplanade. Consistent pacing ensured Rickets crossed the line with a massive smile on her face, completing the run in 4hr17. This marked an impressive debut for this diminutive athlete, recording 12hr40 to finish fourth in the F30 Age Group.
